John F. Kennedy Airport was originally named Idlewind Airport, after the golf course which it overtook upon completion in 1946. The airport was originally to have 55 gates in a single terminal; however, the airlines protested that such a layout would cause confusion and would not be big enough for future travelers. In the end, each major airline was given a terminal to design, resulting in 155 gates. Today, JFK Airport handles more international passengers coming into the U.S. than any other airport in the country.
The airport is located in the Queens borough of NYC, and the surrounding hotels are basic budget-style accommodations. Hampton Inn, Best Western, Hilton, Mariott, and Doubletree all have hotels near to JFK, which cater to travelers. Queens is also full of charming bed and breakfasts, which are a good alternative if you plan to stay in the borough rather than just passing through.
If you should find yourself unexpectedly spending time in Queens as a result of a canceled or delayed flight, you must take the opportunity to explore the borough. Queens has its roots in jazz, which is still prevalent in clubs and venues. A botanical garden, a handful of theaters, and the New York Mets' Shea Stadium are all located within a stone's throw of JFK Airport. There's so much to enjoy in this NYC borough that you may just want to stay!
